Ronny Gani : Superhero Behind the Scenes

Watching the adventures of Captain America and the other superheroes in Avengers: Endgame, most movie-goers would be unaware of the contribution of Indonesian Ronny Gani, one of the talented team of animators who worked on the megahit.

Although he has loved drawing and reading comics since he was a child, becoming a professional animator isn’t something Ronny ever expected to happen. However, after he graduated from the University of Indonesia with
a major in architecture, he realised he didn’t want to design buildings for a living.

The idea of a different career path had begun to take shape in his final semester at university, when Ronny was introduced to 3D software for design visualisation. “My interest grew and I decided to learn more by myself,” interview he explains. He spent around six months teaching himself as much as he could about animation and landed his first job in Batam, Indonesia. After working there for a year, he undertook further projects to improve his skills. He also worked as an intern in Singapore on television projects, such as the Star Wars series on the Cartoon Network.

Working for a visual effects (VFX) company introduced Ronny, who is currently a senior animator, into the world of top Hollywood movies; his work has since featured in The Avengers (2012), Pacific Rim (2013), Transformers: Age of Extinction (2014), Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), Warcraft (2016), The Great Wall (2017), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), and many more.

When asked about his most challenging movie, Ronny responds that each project has its own complexity, depending on the character and performance. Be it a giant robot, kaiju, or an ant-sized man, each creation has its own individual physicality. “However, I never see challenges in a task as obstacles. I’d rather see those challenges as opportunities to explore ideas and creativity,” says Ronny, who is now based in Singapore.

In a bid to encourage other talented creatives, Ronny established an online animation course in 2014. Through the course at bengkelanimasi.com and @bengkelanimasi on Instagram, Ronny provides easy access to handy information and knowledge for those interested in making a career out of animation. Practising animators contribute as tutors to ensure the knowledge passed on to students is on par with what is required in the industry.

For Ronny, the secret to success in such a competitive industry comes down to a simple philosophy: he strives to give nothing but the best. “Be clear about who you are and what you want to do in life,” he says. “I strongly believe when you already know what you want, you will enthusiastically give your best effort to make it come true.”
